Water Cycle Song Video
Here's an engaging and popular video and song about the water cycle. In this approach to teaching the song, the children listen to the song multiple times, thereby internalizing the beat, rhythm, melody, and lyrics. To keep the repetitions interesting, we focus specifically on the lyrics.
Step 1: Listen to the song and identify the parts of the water cycle? How many are there and what are they?
After the song is over, have the students talk with each other in groups about what they identified. Have one or two groups share.
Step 2: Listen to the song again and double-check answer, seeing if there is other information that could be added.
Have the groups discuss again and add information.
Step 3: Listen to the song again and count how many times the you hear the word "water." Have students share how many times they heard "water" in the song. Don't tell them the answer.
Step 4: Listen again to double-check how many time "water" is repeated in the song.
Have students share how many times they heard "water." There will likely be consensus at this point. Ask, "Is the word 'water' used in the verse at all?" "How many times is the chorus repeated?" (the beginning part).
At this point, the students will have heard the chorus enough times to join in with confidence. If they join in earlier, that's okay.
Step 5: Everyone stand and sing the entire song. Keep the actions on water and the beat actions on the verse.
Step 6 and subsequent steps: Have the students come up with repeated actions/movements for chorus and verse. Let the students choose "found sounds" or body percussion to accompany their singing; be sure the accompaniment doesn't become louder than the singing.
